Ford EV Truck Update 11-9-25

No, Ford is not dropping all its electric trucks in 2025; however, its current F-150 Lightning production is under consideration for cancellation due to low profitability and weak EV demand. The company is also reportedly pausing F-150 Lightning production temporarily due to supply chain issues following a fire at an aluminum supplier. In parallel, Ford is accelerating plans for a more affordable, smaller EV truck, and has delayed a future full-size electric truck until 2028.

Current status of the F-150 Lightning

Considering cancellation: Ford executives are reportedly discussing whether to cancel the F-150 Lightning entirely because it has been unprofitable.

Paused production: Production of the F-150 Lightning has been temporarily paused due to a fire at a key aluminum supplier. Ford has stated it will restart production when the supply chain issue is resolved.

Profitability concerns: The company has lost billions in its electric vehicle division, and the sales volume for large, expensive EVs like the Lightning has not met expectations.

Future EV truck plans

Focus on smaller, affordable EVs: In response to market conditions, Ford is now prioritizing the development of smaller, more affordable electric vehicles, possibly priced around $30,000.

Future compact EV: The first vehicle on a new, smaller platform is expected to be a compact electric pickup, similar in size to a Ford Ranger, with a potential rollout in 2027.

Delayed full-size electric truck: Ford has delayed a planned full-sized electric truck, intended as a follow-up to the F-150 Lightning, from its original 2025 launch to 2028.

Ford is currently considering scrapping the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck, but no final decision has been announced as of November 2025. The company is not "dropping its EV trucks" entirely in 2025; rather, it is re-evaluating its large, expensive EV truck strategy due to low demand and significant financial losses in its EV division.

Key points regarding Ford's EV truck plans:

F-150 Lightning's Future is Uncertain: Citing weak demand and substantial EV-related losses (over $13 billion since 2023), Ford executives are discussing whether to cancel the F-150 Lightning entirely.

Production Currently Paused: Ford had already paused F-150 Lightning production in October 2025 due to a fire at an aluminum supplier and is weighing whether to bring the assembly plant back online.

Shift in Strategy: Ford is pivoting its overall strategy to focus on smaller, more affordable electric vehicles (like a potential $30,000 compact EV truck slated for 2027) and increasing its hybrid vehicle production.

Next-Generation Truck Delayed: A previously planned next-generation electric pickup, internally nicknamed "T3", has been delayed from a 2025 model year to 2028.

Continued EV Commitment (Overall): Despite the struggles with the F-150 Lightning, Ford officially maintains a commitment to electrification, aiming for 50% of global sales to be electric by 2030, and continues to produce other EVs like the Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit.
