Crime and Punishment 11-6-25

While national crime rates have seen a recent decline, rankings of major US cities for 2025 often show high crime rates in cities like Memphis, Oakland, St. Louis, and Detroit, driven by violent crime and specific offenses like gun violence and property theft. National trends indicate a decrease in homicides and other violent crimes compared to the pre-pandemic period of 2019, although rates vary significantly by city.

Cities with high crime rates

Memphis, TN: Often listed as having the highest violent crime rate, though some recent data shows improvements in overall crime.

Oakland, CA: Cited for a high violent crime rate and high aggravated assault rates.

St. Louis, MO: Has one of the highest violent crime rates, with high rates of aggravated assault and gun violence.

Detroit, MI: Reported high rates of violent crime, including assaults and gang-related activity.

Baltimore, MD: Consistently ranked among cities with high crime rates, with challenges related to gun crime.

National crime trends

Violent Crime: The FBI reported a national drop in violent crime rates for the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year.

Homicides: Homicides are down significantly, with FBI data showing a 15.2% reduction in the early months of 2024 compared to 2023.

Pre-Pandemic Comparison: For the first half of 2025, several crime rates are lower than they were in the first half of 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic and 2020 protests.

Varying Trends: Despite national declines, crime trends are not uniform across all cities. Some cities, like Memphis, have not seen the same level of improvement as others.

Big US Cities have more violent crimes. Poor Teens from the “slums” found “work” with the Drug Cartels as fast as their “Fast-Food” facilities closed. Others became “shoplifters”.  Big Cities are Punished for their Crimes.

The US did recover briefly before 2000 when locals became owners of small shops and Eateries. This 2nd Trump Team at SBA is planning to repeat this recovery as soon as the “Shutdown” ends.
