Longer Lasting Ford and GM cars 11-23-25

While proper maintenance is key, some U.S.-built Ford and GM vehicles, particularly certain trucks and large SUVs, have a higher chance of lasting over 200,000 or 250,000 miles. According to recent studies, the Ford F-350 Super Duty has a 49.1% chance of lasting over 250,000 miles, and the GMC Yukon XL and Chevrolet Suburban also have a high likelihood of reaching at least 200,000 miles.

Models with high longevity potential

·       Ford F-350 Super Duty: Has the highest likelihood among US-built vehicles, with a 49.1% chance of reaching 250,000+ miles.

·       Ford F-250 Super Duty: Also has a strong chance of lasting long, with a 43.6% probability of reaching 250,000 miles or more.

·       GMC Yukon XL: Was named one of the longest-lasting vehicles in some studies, with a 21.3% chance of lasting over 250,000 miles.

·       Chevrolet Suburban: Another long-lasting GM model, with a high percentage (5.1%) of models reaching 200,000 miles or more.

Other long-lasting models

·       GMC Sierra 2500HD and Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD: These heavy-duty trucks both have a high percentage of vehicles expected to last over 250,000 miles.

·       Ford Expedition: A large SUV from Ford with a good chance of reaching 200,000 miles or more.

·       Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ford F-150: These are among the longest-lasting light-duty trucks, often exceeding 200,000 miles with proper care.

Important considerations

·       Proper maintenance is crucial: Even the most durable vehicles need regular care to reach their full potential lifespan.

·       Model and owner behavior matter: Lifespan depends on the specific model, the year it was manufactured, and the driving habits and maintenance of its owner.

·       Trucks generally last longer: Pickup trucks and large SUVs from both Ford and GM are generally more likely to last longer than average cars, due to their robust engineering for heavy use.

Ford and GM vehicles can last for well over 200,000 miles with proper maintenance, but the specific models achieving the highest mileage are typically large SUVs and trucks, with some individual vehicles reaching 400,000 miles or more.

General Motors (GM)

GM models generally show strong longevity, particularly their large SUVs and heavy-duty trucks. The top performers often found in high-mileage studies include:

·       Chevrolet Suburban: Frequently cited as one of the longest-lasting vehicles, with high percentages reaching over 200,000 and many exceeding 250,000 miles.

·       Chevrolet Tahoe: Similar to the Suburban, Tahoes have a high probability of reaching and exceeding 200,000 miles.

·       GMC Yukon/Yukon XL: These are corporate cousins to the Tahoe/Suburban and exhibit similar durability, often ranking high in studies of vehicles lasting over 200,000 miles.

·       Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra (especially HD models): With proper care, these trucks are built to last 250,000 miles or more, and there are many anecdotal reports of them reaching 400,000+ miles, with some even surpassing 1 million miles with extensive use and meticulous maintenance.

Ford

Ford vehicles also demonstrate excellent longevity, particularly in their truck and SUV lineup:

·       Ford Expedition: Ranks highly in studies for likelihood to reach high mileage, with many examples exceeding 240,000 miles.

·       Ford F-150: A very durable and popular truck, the F-150 can easily last over 200,000 miles, with some owners reporting 300,000 to 400,000 miles or more with good maintenance.

·       Ford Super Duty (F-250, F-350+): These heavy-duty work trucks, especially those with diesel engines, are built for extreme durability and often exceed 300,000 miles, with some reaching 400,000 miles and beyond.

·       Ford Crown Victoria: Though no longer in production, the Crown Victoria is legendary for its longevity (often used as police cruisers and taxis) with many reaching 700,000 miles or more with proper fleet maintenance.

Key Factors for Longevity

The primary determinant of how long any car lasts is not just the brand but the owner's commitment to maintenance. Consistent adherence to the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, timely repairs, and good driving habits are crucial for pushing a vehicle's lifespan past the 200,000-mile mark and beyond.

Ford and GM lost a fortune by overinvesting to comply with Biden’s EV mandate.  They did manage to increase the longevity of some US cars. They will need to reduce their new car prices to regain some market share.
