Government Responsibility Limits

Fire Departments can put out fires, but this rarely saves the house that caught fire.  It is more likely to protect the houses next door depending on what direction the wind is blowing.

EMTs can arrive to your home to help a heart attack victim, but unless you started CPR immediately your heart attack victim probably died.

Police cannot prevent crime, they only investigate crimes after they have been committed and try to identify the criminals. They attempt to get the evidence that might lead them to whoever committed the crime. Police serve as a deterrent.

They hand the case over to the District Attorney who decides who to prosecute. If a jury finds the defendant guilty, the Judge sentences them to jail.

The jails are run by the criminals in many cases and Liberal non-profits lobby for amenities for the inmates. Recidivism is high and many who are released from prison reoffend and end up back in prison.

The Judicial System was established to “offer a peaceful settlement of disputes”; that’s it. It doesn’t ensure “justice”. In criminal cases, taxpayers pay the defendant’s legal expenses for those who cannot afford an attorney.

In civil cases, if a scammer files suit against a rival, they can cost their rival a small fortune in legal fees to defend against the suit. The object of the Judge is to get the parties to “settle”. That means the scammer will be able to extort even more money from the defendant. Judges need to review the cases and throw out the scam cases, but they don’t. Legislatures could solve this by having the loser of the suit pay all the costs, but they don’t.

Governments were established to address the needs of the townsfolk.

When volunteers stopped showing up to build the roads, they collected taxes and hired a road crew.

When the townsfolk needed a good shot to keep the peace and protect them from rowdy cowboys, they collected taxes and hired a Sheriff.

When the townsfolk wanted a school house and a teacher, they collected taxes, built a school house and hired a teacher.

When crowded cities had lots of illnesses from polluted water, they collected taxes and built sewer lines and water treatment plants.

This handled the basics and with the inventions that came out of the Industrial Revolution we had other labor saving appliances and a much improved standard of living.

But politicians wanted to garner favor with the voters, so they gathered more activities for government to perform.
