US Population History


After 1500, the governments of Spain, Portugal, France, Netherlands and England sent expeditions to newly discovered America to claim land and natural resources and set up trading companies.

The population of the English colonies in the Northeast coast of North America began in 1610 with 350 pilgrims and over the next 180 years grew to 4 million by 1790 when we formed the United States.

This population of 4 million had developed to become a self-sufficient market with exports that provided capital in exchange for raw materials sold to Europe.  This 4 million also provided a market for European imported goods.

In 1790, we also had expansion plans beyond the original 13 colonies and the future for increased wealth looked promising.

The new US government chose Tariffs to fund itself.  This was a tax on imports that encouraged the US to expand its capabilities to replace these imports with goods made in the US.

The population of the English colonies from 1610 to 1790 and the US from 1800 to 2010 was as follows:
