In 1929, US
unemployment stood at 3.2%. By 1930 it was 8.7%, In 1931 it was 15.9%. By 1932
it was 23.6%. In 1933 it was 24.9%. In 1934 it was 21.7%. In 1935 it was 20.1%.
In 1936 it was 16.9%. In 1937 it was 14.3%. In 1938 it was 19.0%. In 1939 it
was 17.2%. In 1940 it was 14.6%. In 1941 it was 9.9%.
The US entered World
War II in 1941 and began war production that brought unemployment down in 1942
to 4.7%. In 1943 it was 1.9%. In 1944 it was 1.2%. When the war ended in 1945,
unemployment went to 1.9%. In 1946 it rose to 3.9% and remained around 4% until
1949 when it hit 6.6% and then settled back in 1950 to 4%.
