The US
relationship with France is historic. US Founders sought an alliance with
France to break away from British rule.
France and Britain had fought off and on for centuries. The French sent their Navy to ensure the
surrender of the British at Yorktown in 1781.
The
French were then inspired by US Independence to overthrow their Monarchy. In 1789, food shortages and economic
crises led to the outbreak of the French
Revolution. King Louis and his queen, Mary-Antoinette, were imprisoned
in August 1792, and in September the monarchy was abolished.
The US entered World War I in 1917 and fought
alongside France to defeat the Germans in 1918.
The US entered World War II in 1941 and fought
alongside France to defeat the Germans in 1945.
In 2018, French exports to the US totaled
$45.3B and French imports of US goods totaled $41.58B.
