Populism is a political doctrine that appeals to the interests of the general people,
especially contrasting those interests with the interests of the elite.
The general people are
those who are not part of any special interest agenda. They span across race
and sex for all those who are not special interest support seekers. They are
mostly not union members. They want clean air and water and peace and protection,
but they don’t want corruption, lies, profiteering and overreach by government.
They are anxious for the return of affordable costs in medical care, education,
government and other sectors government has caused to be too expensive to
afford.
The Party that is
consistent in advocating for the “general people” will win a chance to help
them. Republicans now have that chance.
I see it in the
coalitions that form over local issues like the 2012 T-SPLOST defeat. The elite
wanted it, but the general people didn’t. The Party that attends to populist
needs with populist legislation will succeed in continuing to receive populist
support. We need to confirm that we are
on their side.
