CHANGES IN REGIONAL MANUFACTURING EMPLOYMENT, 1970-2011

In developed countries,
manufacturing comprised 16.8 percent of the workforce in 1970, but only 12.8
percent in 2011.
In contrast, several
regions have increased their focus on manufacturing. For example, manufacturing

workforce in 1970, but 21.5 percent in 2011.
Southeast Asia went from
11.4 percent in 1970 to 14 percent in 2011. India increased from 9.4 percent in
1970 to 11.6 percent in 2011.
Table 3: From 1970 to 2011, the percent of workforce
employed in manufacturing dropped from 28.6% to 12.8% in developed countries
including the US, Europe, Japan.
Those manufacturing jobs
went to Asia. Manufacturing jobs in East Asia (China and South Korea) went from
13.9% to 21.5% and to Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia,
Philippines and Thailand)
from 11.4% to 14.0%. India went from 9.4% to 11.6%.
Latin America lost
