US food imports 147 billion
in 2019
The U.S. imported $4.6 billion in agricultural products
from China in 2017.
The top U.S. import commodities
from China are fruits
and vegetables (fresh/processed), snack food, spices, and tea – the combined which accounts for nearly
one-half of the total U.S. agricultural imports from China. A leading producer
and exporter of items like fish, apple juice, and processed fruits and vegetables, China's food exports to the
United States skyrocketed over the last two decades.
FDA's new import tool kit will have a huge impact on food safety given that an
estimated 15 percent of the U.S.
food supply is imported, including 50 percent of fresh fruits, 20
percent of fresh vegetables and 80 percent of seafood.
Wheat sold for
$1.18/bu in 1968, jumped to $5.72/bu in 1973, dropped to $2.51 in 1977, rose to
$5.27 in 1980, dropped to $2.56 in 1986, jumped to $5.62 in 1996, dropped to
$2.64 in 2000, spiked at $11.50 in 2008 and is now at $4.68/bu. Wheat farmers need to be careful with their
money to stay in business in the down years.
Comments
Tariffs will prompt searches
for new customers who will be looking at price and food safety. Crops are vulnerable
to drought, floods, disease and price fluctuations. Farm families need a good
job in town to support their farming habit.
