If you want to help people
enjoy their free time, you may find a ton of opportunities. In fact, in a
recent survey, the leisure and hospitality sector was first among 13 national
industry sectors in terms of job opportunities, with 33 percent of companies in
that area planning to hire new workers in the early months of 2019.1 Some of
the careers that are in demand in the hospitality field include:
1. Restaurant cook
- Preparing
food, ensuring that ingredients are fresh, and keeping the work area clean are
all responsibilities of restaurant cooks. They also may manage other kitchen
staff and help get customers' orders prepared quickly and efficiently. Some
restaurant cooks also develop new recipes and make special dishes for people
with food allergies. Those who can prepare more complex dishes—and satisfy
consumers' increasing desires for healthier options—will be in demand. Total
new job openings: 145,300. Average salary: $27,580.
2. Food preparation worker - Typical tasks for food preparation workers include peeling vegetables, slicing protein selections, and mixing salad ingredients. These workers take directions from cooks and chefs and make sure all the components of a meal are ready when they're needed. As consumers increasingly demand more labor-intensive meals made from scratch, more food prep workers will be needed to help out in the kitchen. Total new job openings: 68,600. Average salary: $24,830.
