Missiles for Ukraine 8-28-25

In July 2025, an agreement was reached for NATO countries to purchase U.S.-made weapons, including Patriot missile defense systems and other missiles, to be sent to Ukraine. While the weapons will be bought from U.S. defense contractors and financed by European NATO allies, they will be sent to Ukraine via the NATO system, which will also shape future weapon packages based on evolving needs.

How the deal works:

·       European Financing: NATO allies, including the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, committed to paying for U.S.-made weapons, such as the Patriot missile system.

·       U.S. Production: The weapons will be built by the American defense industry.

·       NATO Coordination: NATO will coordinate the transfer of these weapons to Ukraine.

·       Faster Delivery: Some weapons may be drawn from existing stockpiles of NATO allies, with the U.S. providing replacements from new production.

Why this is happening:

·       Urgent Need:

Ukraine needs more U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems to defend against Russian ballistic and cruise missiles.

·       President Trump's Initiative:

The agreement was a significant step by President Trump to support Ukraine, with the goal of ending the war.

·       European Involvement:

The deal encourages European countries to step up their financial support for Ukraine.

As of August 2025, NATO countries are coordinating and funding deliveries of U.S.-made missiles to Ukraine, primarily the Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) and Patriot air defense systems. This follows a U.S. policy shift under the Trump administration, where the U.S. is selling the weapons to allies, who then provide them to Kyiv.

Key developments for missile aid in 2025

·       NATO-coordinated delivery: In July 2025, a new mechanism was established where NATO, rather than the U.S. alone, coordinates the delivery of U.S. military equipment to Ukraine. This was a key focus of a White House meeting between U.S. President Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

·       ERAM missiles:

o   Acquisition: In August 2025, the U.S. approved the sale of 3,350 Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) air-launched cruise missiles to Ukraine, with European nations largely funding the $850 million package.

o   Capabilities: These missiles have a range of up to 280 miles, and the first deliveries are expected in September 2025.

o   Restrictions: Use of the ERAMs to strike targets inside Russian territory reportedly requires Pentagon approval.

·       Patriot air defense systems: Amid escalating Russian airstrikes, there is growing urgency among NATO allies to supply Ukraine with more Patriot systems and missiles.

o   Germany, in cooperation with Norway, is providing two Patriot systems, including missiles.

o   Other countries, such as Sweden and Denmark, are also supporting packages to supply Ukraine with Patriot missiles.

·       Funding from allies: In line with the new U.S. policy, European allies and Canada are stepping up their military aid contributions to Ukraine.

o   In August 2025, Nordic countries Sweden, Norway, and Denmark collectively pledged around $500 million to purchase U.S. weapons for Ukraine, including Patriot missiles.

o   Canada also pledged $500 million for a similar package.

·       U.S. limitations: While the U.S. is selling weapons to NATO countries for Ukraine, the Trump administration has not given military equipment directly to Kyiv, following a brief pause in aid earlier in 2025. The U.S. is not providing longer-range missiles intended to strike deep inside Russia.
