US Tariffs on S America 8-4-25

Several countries in South America are currently facing tariffs on their exports to the United States as of August 2025:

·       Brazil: Subject to a 50% tariff on most goods, with some exceptions for certain products such as aircraft and orange juice. This includes a 10% baseline tariff and an additional 40% tariff imposed due to "unusual and extraordinary policies and actions harming U.S. companies, the free speech rights of U.S. persons, U.S. foreign policy, and the U.S. economy".

·       Bolivia: Facing a 15% reciprocal tariff, though its implementation was delayed until at least August 7, 2025.

·       Ecuador: Subject to a 15% reciprocal tariff.

·       Guyana: Facing an additional 15% levy on exports to the US.

·       Trinidad and Tobago: Subject to a 15% reciprocal tariff.

·       Venezuela: Subject to a 15% reciprocal tariff. Further, the US previously imposed an additional 25% tariff on any country that purchases Venezuelan crude oil, which could severely impact its economy.

Note: In July 2025, the U.S. also announced a 10% universal tariff on imports from countries with a trade surplus with the U.S., with a higher 15% rate applied to countries with a trade deficit. However, this is separate from the country-specific tariffs listed above.

It is important to remember that trade policies and tariffs are subject to ongoing negotiation and may change. The Trump administration has implemented various tariffs and trade measures, citing the need to address trade deficits and unfair trade practices.

List countries in South America with US tariffs 2025

In July and August of 2025, the U.S. has implemented tariffs impacting South American countries. Notably:

·       Brazil: Faces a 50% tariff on most goods. This includes an initial 10% "reciprocal" tariff and an additional 40% levy tied to political concerns surrounding the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro. However, some Brazilian exports like orange juice and commercial aircraft are exempt from the additional 40% tariff.

·       Bolivia: Subject to a 15% "reciprocal" tariff, initially delayed until August 7, 2025, but effectively implemented on July 31, 2025.

·       Ecuador: Also faces a 15% reciprocal tariff, according to The White House

It is important to note that these tariffs are part of a broader shift in U.S. trade policy and have generated complex reactions and potential re-alignments in trade relationships within Latin America.
