For 2025, the latest available data indicates a negative trade balance for the United States with Uruguay.

·       Compared to May 2024, US exports to Uruguay increased by 11.6%, while imports from Uruguay increased by 73.2%.

This indicates a significant increase in imports from Uruguay to the United States in the first part of 2025, leading to a shift in the trade balance compared to 2024.

The main drivers of this recent surge in US imports from Uruguay are:

·       Frozen Bovine Meat: Imports of frozen bovine meat from Uruguay to the US saw a sharp increase of 183% between May 2024 and May 2025.

·       Sulfate Chemical Wood pulp: Imports of sulfate chemical wood pulp also saw a significant increase of 57.6% over the same period.

Comments

The $47.4 million US trade deficit with Uruguay will likely be reduced by discouraging the $95.3 million beef imports to the US.
