US Trade Deal with Paraguay 8-7-25

For May 2025, the United States exported $351 million to Paraguay and imported $54.1 million, resulting in a trade surplus of $297 million for the United States. Here's a breakdown of the key products involved in this trade relationship: 

US exports to Paraguay

·       Leading exports: Telephones ($210 million), Computers ($37.1 million), and Refined Petroleum ($23.6 million).

·       Significant growth: Exports of telephones increased by 82.7%, computers by 101%, and other office machines by 88.7% between May 2024 and May 2025. 

US imports from Paraguay

·       Main imports: Frozen Bovine Meat ($30.5 million), Other Oily Seeds ($6.53 million), and Other Inedible Animal Products ($3.62 million).

·       Strong growth: Imports of frozen bovine meat increased by 1420%, other oily seeds by 127%, and other inedible animal products by 338% year-over-year. 

Overall trends

·       Both exports to and imports from Paraguay have seen significant increases between May 2024 and May 2025.

·       The US has consistently maintained a positive trade balance with Paraguay.

·       Paraguay aims to significantly increase beef exports to the US in 2025, hoping to double the volume compared to 2024.

In 2024, the United States experienced a trade surplus with Paraguay, not a deficit. Specifically, the U.S. goods trade surplus with Paraguay was $2.8 billion, according to the United States Trade Representative (.gov). U.S. goods exports to Paraguay were $3.2 billion, while imports from Paraguay were $356.2 million. This represents an increase in both exports and imports compared to 2023, with exports up 14.2% and imports up 37.9%, according to the United States Trade Representative (.gov). 

Comments

It appears that companies in Paraguay have been upgrading their computer and telephone equipment by importing US goods. To achieve a trade balance, Paraguay will need to export more to the US or import less from the US. The 10% Tariff encourages lower beef imports to the US.
